Apprenticeships
This route is more accessible than most people realise, and more valuable. It deserves its own section.
Key point
There is no upper age limit for apprenticeships in England. You can be in your 30s, 40s, 50s, or beyond and still do one. Some of the most valuable qualifications in tech, including degree-level programmes, are available this way.
When most people think about apprenticeships, they picture a young person fresh out of school doing a trade. The reality is very different, and it is worth understanding properly, because this route could be one of the most effective ways into tech at any stage of your career.
From my own experience
I completed a BSc (Hons) in Professional Management through a degree apprenticeship, later in my career, not straight out of school. It was one of the best decisions I have made professionally. I earned while I learned, came out with no tuition debt, and the qualification genuinely opened doors.
I have also managed people through the Digital and Technology Solutions Level 6 programme and seen first-hand what it does for their confidence, their capability, and their careers. More recently, people in my team have been doing AI apprenticeships. The breadth of what is available now is remarkable.
I cannot recommend them highly enough, both as someone who has done one and as someone who has supported others through them.

What an apprenticeship actually is
An apprenticeship is a paid job that includes structured training towards a recognised qualification. You work, you earn a salary, and you spend a minimum of six hours a week on off-the-job learning. You are an employee throughout, with holiday pay, sick pay, and pension contributions. At the end, you have both a work track record and a qualification, with no tuition fees.

Worth knowing
The bit most people do not know
If you are already working for a large employer with an annual payroll over £3 million, they are required to pay 0.5% of their pay bill into a government training fund. That money can only be spent on approved apprenticeship training, and if it is not used within 24 months, it expires. Many large organisations have unspent funds sitting there. Using it to fund your development costs them nothing extra.
